1/4" Analog tape reel rates: If you'd like the awesome sound of analog tape on your project, please inquire. Drums can sound fatter, punchier, and more pleasing to the ear when transferred to tape and then digitally recorded back into the mix. Then there's my favorite... mixing down to tape and then Mastering off of the master tape. I use the tape as a mild form of compression. Vocals can be slowed down after getting recorded to tape to create a deeper voice. It does this without any digital artifacts, since its analog. Digital pitch shifters are cheap and handy, but they definitely don't sound as humanly-natural as a high quality tape machine doing the work. All said, the cost of a reel of tape is about $90. Depending on how it's used, it can be reused many times. I think it's necessary to have a new reel of tape for mix-downs of 1-4 songs, or two reels for 4-8 songs, three reels for 7 or 8 songs to as many as 12 songs. Those tapes would be played back during the Mastering phase. Other applications may be okay to use previously used tapes that are in good condition. Depending on my current tape inventory, I'd like $45 per reel of tape that has been used no more than 1 time, or $10 per reel that's been used more than once, but less than 5 times. Older reels may be free for use, depending on their condition and the desired intent.
Mastering: $30 per-song. I usuall Master through a powerful chain of analog equipment, which includes an LBA Flux Bender stereo passive EQ, an Elysia X Filter Mastering Edition EQ, an Overstayer stereo VCA compressor, a marvelous vintage Fairchild 602 stereo HF peak limiter, an excellent 1980's Otari MTR-12 1/4" 2-track reel-to-reel, and Lynx AD/DA converters. If necessary or desired, Mastering plugins may be used to complement the chain. Throughout the process, a pair of massive Tekton Pendragon full-range tower speakers and a KRK 12" subwoofer unveil the hidden tidbits of sound between all the notes. Revisions are $15. Reel-rates mentioned above to Master with analog tape. Digital mixes can be transferred to tape in order to achieve an extra level of warm compression and tone. From there it can be Mastered through an analog chain of equipment before being converted back to digital with high-quality Lynx mastering AD converters.
